Port Labs Partners with Life Sciences Facility BADASS Labs

Port Labs is excited to announce a partnership with Alameda, CA-based life sciences venture studio, Bay Area Disruptor and Startup Support Labs, (BADASS Labs). This partnership brings complementary resources together for the benefit of Northern California companies.

“We’re excited to have found a partner who excels at supporting the complex needs of life sciences startups,” says Port Labs Managing Partner Sal Bednarz. “David and his team have figured out how to do something uniquely challenging, and it plugs right into how Port Labs and our sister companies do similar things in other industry sectors.”

Port Labs is part of the Port Companies, which includes Port Workspaces (which provides commercial office coworking), Port Kitchens (which manages co-operative kitchens and event space), and other real estate development activities.

Port Labs will provide business support services to BADASS Labs member companies, and enable those companies to participate in startup community events that help to create more visibility, excitement, partnerships, and access to capital for those companies. “This partnership expands the startup community we serve, which helps us recruit more strategic partners and sponsors who work with startups, for everyone’s benefit,” says Bednarz.

“The scientific work that underpins innovation in life sciences requires specialized facilities and equipment that most young companies just can’t afford,” says BADASS Labs Founder and CEO David Kiewlich. “Having founded several biotech companies, I know that the early part of the company lifecycle is full of challenges and requires incredible passion.  It’s vitally important that every company gets the support they need to demonstrate success in their critical scientific work, and that they develop their business at the same time as their science. I am excited that our partnership with Port Labs will further enhance the support for all of our member companies.”

BADASS Labs launched its first 25,000 sq ft managed site in Alameda, CA in late 2020. A second similarly-sized site in Alameda opened in April 2022. These sites together are home to more than 30 biotech startups and small companies. Both sites are near capacity, and further expansion is already underway. Medtech and other lab-based startups need this sort of lab facility to advance the science they’re working on. This enables them to generate the scientific proof they will need to raise the capital to further commercialize. BADASS is one of a very small number of companies in Northern California who can provide this access.

Port Labs and BADASS Labs are pursuing site expansion opportunities throughout the Northern California region, and beyond. These facilities would include a combination of rapid prototyping, life sciences, and business accelerator programs, and connect the companies in them to a rapidly expanding network of resources they need.
